The Maw will “ digest” the items and spit out a geyser of raw magical power the Hellqueen can tap for her own uses, greatly enhancing her already for- midable abilities. She intends to “feed” the artifacts to the Maw of Vhoka, an ancient mystic site located in the caldera of a volcano. Hellqueen’s impassioned jealousy is currently motivating her to complete the ritual she has discovered, which will allow her to sac- rifice magical artifacts known as the Bloodstones of Vhoka to absorb their power. One such entity slumbered in the heart of Gwen Nugent, a former ad- ministrative assistant from Freedom City. Unwilling to relinquish her hold on Earth-Prime’s magic but unable to fully claim it as her own, she has waited and watched, subtly influencing those magical entities of the world whose hearts are vulnerable to corruption and evil. Unfortu- nately, her dead rival, Adrian Eldrich, had prepared wards to prevent exactly what she had planned. Her ultimate goal of ascension demanded the sacrifice of her physical body as she bound herself to the planet’s magical energy. For years, the dark lord Una has existed between life and death, trapped in the mana of Earth-Prime as a powerless phantom, unable to call upon her vast magical power or interact with the living world.
